My Tasting Journal: Keeping Track of Foods I Try

The idea for My Tasting Journal comes from years of listening to parents of children with Down syndrome, autism, and other disabilities, their children and young adults. Through listening and hands-on experience it is clear that much of the "picky eating" issues families experience is due to sensory issues related to food. There is something about the food that is unpleasant: the feel, the smell, the temperature...it's hard to say.

But when given a chance to try foods in a safe environment, I find that most people, regardless of age or label, are more adventuresome. For some people this means helping prepare a food, but not eating it. For others, safety is tasting foods as a separate activity, and knowing that no one has to do anything. When allowed to choose how brave to be, people do more than we expect.

But what good is it, if you never see the food again?

So I created My Tastaing Journal: Keeping Track of Foods I Try to keep the experience alive.

My Tasting Journal is an electronic journal template designed to encourage trying new foods. It provides a structured method for describing how a food tastes, feels, and to record opnions about the experience.

I used these templates in workshops with young adults. It was a great way to share what happened during our Expand Your Palate sessions. The most interesting part to me, was hearing the surprise of parents, siblings, and support staff.

This e-book includes lesson plans, guidelines for tasting activities, and two different templates for recording food experiences. Pages are bordered with the colors used in "My Pyramid." with the name of each food group at the top.
